Subscribe to My Site: Subscription Options in WordPress

Posted on April 25, 2013 by Lorelle VanFossen

Exmaple of feeds and subscription and sharing options on Mashable. There are many ways to subscribe to a WordPress site. There are also many different types of subscriptions.

Here is an example list of the various ways a person can subscribe to your site’s posts.

  • Email Subscription: Readers sign up for an email notification when new content is published on the website.
  • Follow: There are many types of follows, adding the site’s activity to your social media stream. WordPress.com offers Follows with the option to get email notifications as well as the site streamed in your Blog Follows stream.
  • Feeds: Feeds are the syndicated and distributable version of your content. People use feed readers to keep up with the latest activity on their favorite sites.

A subscription is different from a share. Sharing is a one-time event. The shared article information is not an act of subscribing to or adding the site to your social web stream of information. A subscription is not just support but a choice by the reader to keep up with that site’s activities.

Subscribers are your site’s fan club.

This tutorial will focus on the three types of subscriptions, email, follow, and feeds, to help you promote these subscription options on your WordPress site.

As you add subscription options to your site, check out what your site looks like through email notifications, follows, and feeds. When you design a WordPress Theme, it is important to design for all the ways a site will be viewed and accessed.

Example of social media incorporated in the design of a web page by Mashable.com.For example, the image to the right in this article is a screenshot of a post article on Mashable, a popular online magazine featuring tech news. The designer has incorporated social media sharing, sharing stats, and encouragement of social sharing and subscriptions into the design of the site title area. The little worm-like line to the right of the sharing icons is a trending chart. It shows the popularity of the article based upon the social sharing, showing you the possible creative options.

As you go through this tutorial, examine the traditional examples used to promote sharing and subscription options, but consider how to creatively incorporate sharing and subscriptions into the design of the WordPress Theme. If you are designing for the public with a WordPress Theme, remember that users will customize menus and widgetized areas with their own ideas on where and how to place these icons and links. Give them options but have fun with these as well.

How to Sign Up for WordPress.com Blog

CTEC 280 How to start a WordPress.com site from Lorelle VanFossen on Vimeo.

This video contains instructions and screencasts for registering for a WordPress.com blog. It includes tips for new users and already registered users.

We will be starting with a WordPress.com blog whether or not you have another WordPress site.

Trust me. You will be making mistakes, experimenting, messing things up. The class also needs to be all working on the same thing for the first few weeks of the class – no arguments. Once you learn how this all works, you can go mess up your own site at will. 😀

Here is what you need to know about creating your WordPress.com site:

  1. Create a temporary blog domain name such as myclassblog1234.wordpress.com or myname987.wordpress.com. You will NOT change this. Pick right the first time.
  2. Even if you have a WordPress site, you will only use the above WordPress.com site for homework and class assignments. You may transfer content over to your site later.
  3. You will choose the Twenty-eleven WordPress Theme. Everyone will be using it for the first few weeks of the class.
  4. Homework assignments are to be stored in the “Class Assignments” parent category.
  5. While you can publish whatever you want on your blog, it is recommended you publish your homework and work with content related to the site’s intent.
  6. The Privacy Settings for the site must be set to visible and “Ask search engines NOT to index this site.”
  7. During the class, Clark College teachers and the students in this class will be reading the blog, therefore your content must be work/family appropriate during the course.
  8. Homework assignments may be copied and used for future classes by the teacher and college.
  9. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Homework assignments are not to be copied and published publicly on your blog.
  10. It is your responsibility to keep the blog maintained or delete it no sooner than 6 weeks after the class grades are posted.

If you are already a WordPress.com member, go to Add Another Blog or go to Dashboard > My Blogs and look for the button that says “Register a New Site” or blog. The button changes from time to time.
